WAKANDA WONDERLAND IN THE FILLMORE
SAN FRANCISCO, California (December 11, 2021) – In collaboration with community partners, the African American Art and Culture Complex (AAACC) hosted its annual Holiday Fair on a Saturday afternoon filled with entertainment, food, gifts, games and other activities. Created by past executive director and current San Francisco Mayor London Breed, the event celebrates and honors the children, youth and families who live in the Fillmore Western Addition neighborhood.
This year’s theme, “Wakanda Winter Wonderland,” included carnival rides, bouncy houses, crafting tables, and a 360-video recording booth. A special program with the Mayor and AAACC Co-Executive Directors Melonie and Melorra Green also featured a live hip hop reunion performance.
The event was co-hosted by Mo’ Magic and held throughout several neighborhood locations with a mini-train transporting families to each site: AAACC, the Ella Hill Hutch Community Center, Buchanan Mall, and Freedom West Homes.
The event marked the first time many people momentarily left COVID isolation and saw others in the community before the end of the year. “So many people left the fair refreshed and feeling good,” said Melonie Green. “The community shined that day.”
CommunityGrows community engagement coordinator Brittney Barron said in their newsletter, “It is so cool to see so many people come together for events like this. I loved watching the kids play and I hope that they know and can see that they have people around them to support them as they grow in these communities.”
