Location: This is a full-time, onsite position located in San Francisco, CA.

Job Summary

At the African American Art & Culture Complex (AAACC), our commitment to adhering to all emergency protocols and facility guidelines is paramount, as we welcome a diverse and vibrant flow of employees, guests, performers, and artists daily. We are in search of a skilled Facilities Technician to join our team, someone who is adept at navigating both routine and unexpected facilities-related challenges that arise from the dynamic activities within our community. The ideal candidate will possess practical experience in fields such as carpentry, electrical work, or plumbing, coupled with a strong foundation in customer service. With an attentive and proactive approach to identifying repair needs, conducting preventive maintenance, and undertaking DIY projects, this role is crucial in maintaining the artistic integrity and operational excellence of our complex. Working closely under the guidance of the Facility & Operations Manager, the Facilities Technician will play a critical role in ensuring both the indoor and outdoor spaces of AAACC are well-maintained and secure, involving regular patrols, surveillance monitoring, building inspections, and ensuring the safety of all who enter our doors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily inspections and maintenance of the AAACC facilities to identify and address any defects or areas in need of repair, ensuring a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and functionality.
  • Manage waste and recycling processes, including the timely relocation of bins and oversight of environmental sustainability practices.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, including but not limited to, electrical, plumbing, and carpentry repairs, ensuring all areas are operational and presentable.
  • Support event logistics by setting up and breaking down event spaces, ensuring they meet the specific requirements of each function.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of all areas, including galleries, offices, and common spaces, contributing to a positive and professional environment.
  • Oversee the distribution of mail and deliveries, ensuring efficient and secure handling of all items.
  • Engage with vendors, contractors, and community partners to coordinate maintenance and project activities, fostering positive relationships and effective communication.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of facility safety and emergency protocols, including fire safety, egress, and security measures.
  • Assist in the management of the AAACC’s physical assets, including art installations and equipment, ensuring their preservation and optimal presentation.
  • Provide backup support to the front desk and other areas as needed, demonstrating flexibility and a team-oriented approach.

Profile of Candidate

  • Proven experience in facilities maintenance or a related field, with a strong background in carpentry, electrical, or plumbing work.
  • Excellent customer service skills, with the ability to engage positively with a diverse community of staff, visitors, and artists.
  • Quick problem-solving abilities and attention to detail, with a focus on preventative maintenance and efficient response to immediate needs.
  • Familiarity with the cultural and historical significance of the AAACC and the Fillmore district, with a passion for supporting the arts and community engagement.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to maintain clear and effective interactions with team members and external partners.
  • Commitment to the AAACC’s mission of promoting and celebrating African American art and culture, contributing to an inclusive and empowering work environment.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • This position requires flexibility in hours, including availability for AM and PM shifts, including weekends, to support AAACC’s operational needs.
  • The role involves both indoor and outdoor work, with physical requirements such as lifting, standing, and walking through the facility.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the facilities.
  • Must be able to access all parts of the company equipment.
  • The Facilities Technician must adhere to all health and safety guidelines, including those related to COVID-19 prevention, to ensure the wellbeing of the AAACC community.
